SEPARATING GIFTS FROM TALENTS

Greetings in Jesus Name:

Many people have a wrong concept of GIFTS and TALENTS in the church today.  Among the first things we need to realize is that a gift is something freely given to us while a talent is something that needs to be cultivated.

God gives us many gifts like His Divine Promises Psalms 84:11.  God gives us gifts like that of prosperity, or rest.  God also gives us Spiritual gifts like that of a new spirit within us Ezekiel 11:19 the free gift of Salvation Romans 5:16-18, 6:23; 12:6-8.  The gifts that Christ gives to us have a rich variety according to Ephesians 3:10, but they are also very different than the TALENTS that we receive from God and they have a very different purpose.  It is important that we as servants of God can understand these differences.

In most cases when we hear of talents we find God showing us they have been given to be increased,  While talents can be viewed as being very must like gifts they are mostly meant to be some kind of skill we can use to produce spiritual fruit with.  As an example while we may have been given the gift of prosperity through things we have not ourselves earned there is also such a thing as a God given talent to produce wealth like we find in Deuteronomy 8:18.  God speaks in several places of various skills like the Pen of a skillful write Psalms 45:1.  Many times it becomes God's blessings upon the work of hands like in Psalms 90:17.  We have seen what happens when talents are given to wicked servants who either abuse them or miss use them.  We have seen that many men have talents, but it is God who is sovereign over all things.  A talent can be given and then taken away if it is not used properly.  Talents have much to do with the function of the body of Christ in this world, and when we begin to look at this relationship we can find a direct correlation between the Christian and God's call to use the talents to produce fruit of the Spirit Romans 11:29  Quite a lot is given to us through the word about that kind of talent/call throughout Romans 12:4-8 ; 1 Corinthians 12:14-20.

We are called on to seek those talents that we have been given and to put them to use in the Kingdom as a part of God's provision to the church. We are never meant to neglect our talents, but o put them to use for the support and the nourishment of the body of Christ. 1 Timothy 4:14.  We should be preparing to succeed  as a believer Hebrews 13:20-21 and using our talents for the benefit and the good of one another is a great place to start.  May you richly bless God through your life in Him.
