THE ART OF MENTORING
Greetings in the name of Jesus:
I really want to begin to create writings from this point on that can be held on to because they deliver something Spiritually that people will want to keep. When I started to deal with the purpose and the teachings of mentoring some 35 years ago God lead me to realize the importance of it in the true growth of the Church. Over the years I have learned so much more about the process, and what God's intentions have been to take one person at a time and place into them the Gospel message to insure they had a firm grasp of what was needed to grow a Christian. That process is among the most slow and difficult of all things that any Christian can under take, and yet it remains the most rewarding and important ways we can use to glorify God in this life.
The first thing that we as Christians need to realize is that in order for us to be a mentor we first must become a real person in Christ. For most people this means that we need to be a friend that can be trusted before we can become a person that someone is willing to confide in. For the most part that means we must be willing to see a need in someones life and fill that need first. People will not automatically turn to God for help, but in many cases they will turn to someone in the world with them whom they see only as a good friend first. It is interesting that so many have said "OH I just can't be that "Super Christian"...and most people will not turn to someone who looks on themselves as that.
People seem to really need someone they can approach as a real person rather than someone who seems to have a different agenda of trying to SAVE them first. We all know the importance of leading someone to Christ, but they first of all have to find an avenue through someone that can and will actually show them who Christ is to a life without Bible Thumping every time they speak to them. There is a real trust issue when someone thinks that you have an alternative agenda in your interest of them...that usually speaks of insincerity, and just another sales looking to be made.
Jesus definitely had a goal in mind in His ministry, but it was not to convince people about God... instead it became to show them what it was to have God in life, and to allow God's Spirit to drawn people into a desire to have that in their life as well. Jesus didn't try to go out and conquer this world; instead He concentrated on 12 people whom He decided to mentor and place within them the knowledge and the Spirit of the Father so that they could go forth and continue the work that He had started. This week I want to continue to speak more about mentoring in various ways. I really do believe that God is calling us back to that very method of testifying to the world around us. I want to walk us through some of what God has really asked us to be and do in order that we could be complete mentors to others in the Spirit of God. I want for you to be praying for me this week as I pray for you. Let us begin a dialogue on mentoring that will help us all within the body of Christ to grow and share. Write to me with some of your own experiences, and put in the blog some of your personal testimonies that will enrich and bless the Bride of Christ across this world. I look forward to hearing from you...may you richly bless God through your life in Him.
