STARTING TO PUT THE PIECES OF MENTORING TOGETHER
Greetings in the name of Jesus:
I want to deal with Mentoring in a very practical and real way because it is the most God simple, not church complicated thing that exists within our Christian life. It is much like meeting a new friend for the first time...we are called on to make a discernment about the person we meet. We ask ourselves some questions first of all; Is there something that draws me to this person right away? Do I feel a pull from God to spend more time getting to know them, and if I do is there a connection that I can make in this life with them?
Like with everyone we meet these basic questions need to be answered because if there is no real connection with a person it will be impossible to make any kind of deep spiritual impression in their heart until there is. Unlike meeting someone brand new we can usually feel God is drawing either us to the person or the person to us first...and there is almost always a hidden reason for something like that which needs to be both prayed about and looked into in more detail. Never jump into a snap judgment about someone whom God sends to you. I also want for each of us to remember that no matter if we like a person or not we should be very careful in the number of people we take on in mentoring because of the commitment that must be made to that person. We are called there as Representatives of God, and so we have to be dead level honest with the person we are called to. They also need to be willing to listen to what God is saying through us therefore when we are with them we need to listen carefully to the Holy Spirit within us speaking.
We don't personally have to be perfect as we mentor someone...in fact many people tend to grow personally as they mentor and work with another life. The reason for that is simple...we have to make a commitment to the person we work with in Christ , but also to a deeper walk with God personally. The mentoring ministry is one which takes on phone calls in the middle of the night, and all of the difficulty of the life of the person God has called us to work with. Most people who start mentoring with someone never realize that fact until they get later into the relationship, and by that time either there will be a great frustration start to build between the two people or something needs to change before it gets too late to correct. There is a certain level in Christ that needs to be maintained at all times, and it is always from the mentor to the one being mentored to keep that in a correct perspective. There is something else as well that happens as we mentor which is very healthy for both people, and that is to stay accountable to one another for what we do in Christ. For both people involved with this type of witness and testimony there is an expected closeness that comes with sharing ones personal life and thoughts, and God knows that. In fact it is one of the things that God promotes as we come together in a family unity with each other. If it does not help you to come closer to Christ don't even go there. As an example; unless you are very solid in the Lord never try to mentor someone in the opposite sex....I'm just saying...May you richly bless God through your life in Him.
