LETTING OUR LIGHT SO SHINE

We are told in by Jesus in Matthew 5:
"We are the light of this world" yet every time we try to shine on our own there seems to be nothing but trouble that comes from it.  I believe it is because we miss read the scripture just like the Scribes and Pharisees did in Jesus time.  We get the mistaken idea that it is we who do the shining, and we convince ourselves that we are much more important in the process of shining than we really are.  The truth is that it isn't we who are the light of the world at all, but rather we are reflecting the light that comes from God to the world around us, but we can only reflect that light if we are positioned in the right way to reflect the light through  the prism that is built within us.

For many years now I have had a love for old light Houses and for what they each have stood for over time to the mariners who have used them.  Always in times when the shore could not be seen the lighthouse would be a symbol of safety and comfort for those who needed to regain their bearings on the water.  There has never been a time when the light for guidance and safety has been more needed than now.  It is interesting that a Lighthouse works in the same way our lives should work in sharing the light of God's love.  It is not a direct light like you might think but a reflection of light that is cast from a mirror held at just the right angle for maximum reflection over a long distance., and then broadcast through rotating it 360 degrees in a constant pattern where all can see it.

Jesus said that a house set on a hill cannot be hidden at night because of the light that shines from inside.  If we truly have  God's light living within us we will not be able to hide that light either because if we proclaim Jesus as Lord of our lives this world will no doubt hold our lives up as an example of what we should be. Most of the time all that is needed is for them to use the very words we quote to them back at us to see that we have feet of clay.  While we could never stand as a source of real light to this world we can be a reflection of what that truly means. It is a worthy goal for anyone to have.  Do you know of someone in your life who reminds you of a lighthouse today? If you do then let them know, and then stay close to the light they project for your life.  May you richly bless God through your life in Him.
